Exhibition 3rd I - 第三只眼睛
Exhibition from 14 August till 5 September
Venue: Dutch Cultural Center, Shanghai and MK Gallery, Rotterdam

For 3rd I, a project by the new media and conceptual artists Graham Smith and Christina Smith, professionals and adolescents will participate in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and in Shanghai, China. Their mutual task will be to elaborate and visualize their ideas concerning the future of their cities by making maquettes. They will tangibly express these ideas in the models, but also by video debates, directed by Maartje Nevejan, founder of Couscous Global in Amsterdam.

The results of the Chinese and Dutch Teams will be displayed in Shanghai. Specially developed remote controlled mini-robots equipped with cameras (“third eyes”) will stroll through the model streets. Local visitors can steer some of the robots with their body, standing on a platform in a videogame-like cave with surrounding projections and online visitors can steer the web-videorobots using a special developed interface on the project website or visiting the virtual exhibition site in Rotterdam. An online audio-video link will connect the two exhibition spaces, Video images of the robots camera view will be projected on a 180-degree panoramic screen so that the model buildings will be magnified to monumental size and the viewer experiences the robots view as a pedestrian view. Additionally the two audiences will be able to communicate with each other using the Telepresence-Cafés facilities in both exhibitions, the webchair and webtable.

Participants from Shanghai and Rotterdam publish their research and projects on http://3rdeye2010.wordpress.com.
